At Derby City Mission, we often talk about what it means to meet people where they are — not just practically, but personally. A letter we received recently reminded us of exactly what that looks like in real life.

The letter came from someone who had experienced homelessness and used several of DCM's services during that period. They wrote to us simply to say thank you. We're sharing it here, with their permission, because we think it captures something important about what this work really means.

"Hello,

I hope you are well.

I wanted to share a short story about how Derby City Mission helped me during a very difficult time in my life.

When I became homeless, I didn't even have enough money to buy basic groceries. I came to the café and was given two bags of food, completely free. That support meant so much to me at a time when I felt very uncertain about everything. It was not just food, it was dignity and hope.

I also stayed at one of Derby City Mission's overnight facilities for almost a month while I was trying to find somewhere to live. Every evening there were warm drinks — tea, coffee, milk — and in the morning, we were given toast and drinks. It may sound simple, but during that period it made a huge difference. Having a safe place to sleep and kind people around me gave me stability when I had none.

The staff were always friendly, respectful and supportive. I never felt judged — only helped.

Today, I am grateful to say that I have found a place to stay and I have recently started working. I truly believe that Derby City Mission played a big part in helping me get back on my feet and move forward.

I cannot thank Derby City Mission enough for the support you gave me when I needed it most."
